HOPE FOR MCDOWELL:

COUNTY HISTORY

McDowell County was nationally known for its prominent coal mining industry…with some of the best coal in the country.  The land was rich with the natural compounds, and the population skyrocketed to over

100,000+ people

Many of these people were living in housing provided by the coal companies.

Sadly, with many of the mines closing over the years due to various contributing factors and many companies leaving the area, the county currently  sits at about

18,000 people

"There was such a severe job exodus, many left their homes, abandoned their mortgages, and tried to start life over elsewhere. "

Work has continued to leave the county since the 60's, but the dwindling generations of the coal miners & steel workers have never left. The poverty issue was seen on a national level, and was 1st recognized by

President Kennedy. “John F. Kennedy’s first executive order as president started a pilot food stamp program.  On May 29, 1961, he sent his Secretary of Agriculture to Welch, WV to deliver the nation’s first food stamps – $95 dollars’ worth, to an unemployed coal mine worker with 13 children” Over 50% of all jobs since 1962 have left the county.

The echo's of residual poverty can be heard clearly in McDowell County today.  The results of generational poverty that have impacted the county are:

50% unemployment

10%  of annual deaths are opioid related

34% of the working job force are below poverty level

$21,000 median household income | national average: $60,000

Teen pregnancy: 96 out of 1,000 - Triple the national average

1 in 4 children live below the poverty level (25%)

1 in 2 children of single mothers live below the poverty level (50%)
